IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Alex,

I hope you are doing well and this letter finds you in good health. As you know that I have enrolled for the evening ‘Computer Coding’ course. But, I will not be able to attend the classes as I am a little busy.

The main hurdle is that I have a job to take care of.I work in a toy factory where I serve as toy manufacturer .Last month, my job shift was in the morning and I opted to join this course hoping that it will help in the future to get a better job. But, they have doubled my shift as the work load has increased. So, it is a bit difficult for me to join the course.

I assumed that I should join the course in the next term.I am thinking to transfer my fees into the next term. So, I was hoping that you can guide me about the forms I need to fill out.I will be thankful to you for this favour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work schedule, state your intention to defer the course to the next term, and ask for guidance on the administrative process. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an institution. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough context for the reader to understand your predicament. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are slightly more polished and that the explanation of the 'hurdle' is integrated more smoothly into the flow of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'But', 'So', and 'As you know' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. For instance, starting multiple sentences with 'But' or 'So' can make the writing feel a bit repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases, such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'due to the fact that', to create a more sophisticated and natural progression between your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'enrolled', 'hurdle', and 'manufacturer'. The meaning is always clear, and the language is appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'I work in a toy factory where I serve as toy manufacturer' (which is slightly redundant) and 'I opted to join' (which is acceptable but could be more natural). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'As you know that I have enrolled' (the 'that' is unnecessary here) and 'I assumed that I should join' (where 'would like to defer' would be more accurate). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some spacing issues after periods. To improve, focus on refining your use of complex sentence structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement and article usage are consistently accurate.
