IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing regarding the evening course that I recently enrolled in. Unfortunately, I have found it difficult to continue the course because I have become very busy with my college studies and other responsibilities. As a result, I am unable to attend the evening classes regularly and I am worried that I will not be able to complete the course successfully.
I am still very interested in studying this course, so I would like to continue it next term instead. I believe that postponing the course will give me enough time to manage my responsibilities and attend the classes properly.
Could you please advise me about what I should do in this situation? I would also like to know whether I need to complete any forms, pay any additional fees, or officially withdraw from the current course before enrolling again next term.
Thank you for your understanding and assistance. I look forward to your advice.
Kind regards,
Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your college studies, state your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and appropriately ask for advice regarding administrative procedures like fees or withdrawal. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an institution. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the situation to your proposed solution and finally to your request for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'I am still very interested', and 'I would also like to know' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard, coherent structure for formal correspondence. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases such as 'enrolled in', 'manage my responsibilities', and 'officially withdraw' are used accurately and fit the formal context of the letter. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is generally standard rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more advanced academic vocabulary. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language is consistently appropriate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the conditional structure in 'I am worried that I will not be able to complete the course successfully' and the compound-complex structure in your final paragraph. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over tense and subject-verb agreement. The writing is clear, fluent, and demonstrates a high level of accuracy throughout the response.
