IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the challenges that I am facing due to extreme work pressure at office. I am a student of the Artificial Intelligence course in the university.

One of my teammate has taken parental leaves. As I am leading the team, it is my responsibility to deliver his task. As a result, I have to work longer hours due to which I am unable to focus on my studies. Sometimes I have to work for more than ten hours a day sacrificing my work-life balance.

I would like to request a pause on my ongoing sessions. Moreover, I am planning to restart my studies in the next term. This will not only help me to relax after work hours but will also allow me to completely focus on work to complete the pending assignments.

Would you be kind enough to consider my request? I am open to any advice that you might have for me to manage this situation in a better way. Feel free to share your valuable insights about this situation, I believe your guidance will help to manage this stressful period well.

Hoping to hear back soon.

Yours faithfully,

Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response effectively addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work pressure, state your intention to pause the course and resume next term, and politely request advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a logical explanation for your request. You have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the prompt by providing a clear context and a specific request for guidance, which ensures the reader understands your position and needs immediately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the problem to the proposed solution and finally the request for advice. You use cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Moreover', and 'This will not only... but will also' effectively to link your sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. The use of formal salutations and sign-offs is also correct for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal context, such as 'extreme work pressure', 'work-life balance', and 'valuable insights'. There is a minor collocation error in the phrase 'One of my teammate', which should be 'One of my teammates'. Additionally, 'at office' is slightly unnatural; 'at the office' or 'at work' would be more standard. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and maintains a professional tone throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free and clear. There is a minor grammatical slip in 'One of my teammate has taken parental leaves', where 'leaves' should be the singular 'leave' in this context. The sentence 'I am a student of the Artificial Intelligence course in the university' is grammatically correct but could be more naturally phrased as 'at the university'. Overall, your control of grammar is strong, and the occasional errors do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
