Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally inform you that I would like to take the course which I registered next term. I recently enrolled in an evening course this term but I just found out my schedule is too tight to continue.
Let me explain my situation. My work starts by 8am and ends at 4pm in the evening but presently my work got busier, I could work until 6pm. Initially, I taught could manage but is not possible to continue with the classes.
Could you kindly help me cancel the course till next term so that I can participate fully to the activities of the classroom. I would like to know if I could get some reading materials for the course, so I could be reading as well.
What do you think I should do about my situation. I would like to hear from you and how you can be of help to me on this matter. Looking for to hearing from you.
Thanks for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding your work schedule, clearly stated your desire to defer the course to the next term, and requested advice on how to proceed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the situation is slightly more precise; for example, you mention 'my work got busier' but could elaborate slightly more on how this specifically prevents attendance. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Initially' and 'so that' to connect ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between explaining your work hours and the request to cancel could be smoother. Additionally, the final paragraph is a bit fragmented. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would improve the progression of your ideas and help the letter feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'formally inform' and 'participate fully'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I taught could manage' (should be 'I thought I could manage') and 'Looking for to hearing' (should be 'Looking forward to hearing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your spelling and word forms are accurate, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'sufficiently flexible' for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would like to take the course which I registered next term' (missing 'for'), 'My work starts by 8am' (should be 'at'), and 'is not possible' (missing the subject 'it'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing the number of error-free sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
