ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I'm writing this letter to inform you that I'm unable to join the evening course since I'm too busy during that time. Due to this, I would like to join the course in the next term.
I'm a cricket player and have my matches in every evening. I would like to spend more time to improve my performance in the match. This year our team will going to participate in the state level competition. My team has selected me an opener batsman. They have fully trusted on me. So, I don't want to let them disappoint because of my poor performance. Since my cricket classes clash with evening course, I'm unable to attend them.
However, on the other side, I also like to attend Maths classes since this has always been my favourite subject. In the afternoon, I will be available for 2-3 hours. I would like to study Maths subject during this time.
Since I'm available in the afternoon for 2-3 hours, I will appreciate that if you could send me the recorded lectures so that I can utilize my time in studying maths during that time.
I hope you are understanding my situation and co-operating me.
Best Regards,
Ram Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding your cricket commitments, stated your desire to defer the course to the next term, and requested advice regarding recorded lectures. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly inconsistent; for instance, the transition between your cricket commitments and your request to study Maths is a bit abrupt. While you cover the requirements, the logic behind wanting to study Maths while being too busy for the evening course could be more clearly articulated to ensure the reader fully understands your proposed solution.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Since', to link ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'during that time' and 'in the afternoon'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be improved to better connect your cricket schedule with your alternative study plan. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'participate', 'competition', and 'utilize'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'trusted on me' (should be 'trusted me') and 'let them disappoint' (should be 'let them down'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. You rely on some basic phrasing, but the language is functional and appropriate for a general correspondence task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'will going to participate' (should be 'will be participating' or 'are going to participate'), 'matches in every evening' (should be 'matches every evening'), and 'co-operating me' (should be 'cooperating with me'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but more attention to tense consistency and verb patterns would enhance your accuracy.
