IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear department team,

I hope you’re doing well.

I recently enrolled in personal support worker course in your institution and got the evening class in second batch. But I cannot begin with this timing because I have my work during this time.

Although studies are more important than anything else but for that I have to pay the fees. I would like to continue this batch from the next term instead of these evening classes. Until the next term, i will collect the fees and prefer to join in the morning batch. So that both things will continue side by side.

I also want to get an advice from you what else I can do for this problem. Might be if there are morning classes in this batch or any option I will happily accept the offer. I shall be very thankful to you.

Looking forward for your response.

Warm regards,

Jessica kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding the work schedule, stated your preference to defer to the next term, and requested advice. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you need to collect fees before the next term is a bit unclear and could have been expanded to sound more professional. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons are fully articulated and that the request for advice is integrated more naturally into the flow of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the situation, the proposed solution, and the request for advice. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'So that both things will continue' and 'Might be if there are' feel slightly disjointed. Improving the transition between sentences using more sophisticated linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'enrolled', 'institution', and 'side by side'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'get an advice' is grammatically incorrect (advice is uncountable), and 'begin with this timing' is not a natural collocation. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and the correct usage of uncountable nouns. Your vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I recently enrolled in personal support worker course' (missing article 'a'), 'I have my work' (unnatural phrasing), and 'I also want to get an advice' (incorrect article usage). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'i will collect'. To improve, focus on article usage, subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for basic mechanical errors.
