IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir/mam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that, unfortunately I am unable to continue my evening course in community and justice services that i recently started.

Due to some financial circumsentances i have to work overtime at my company every evening. Consequently, I am extremely busy working long hours every day and It is impossible to attend scheduled evening classes. Moreover, I unable to give sufficient time to my course assignments, tests etc.

I am willing to complete my programme as I want to pursue my career in this field in future. However, I would like to defer my enrollment until next term because I will be financially secured at that time. In addition to that I believe I will have more availability to focus on it next semester.

could you please advise me on the procedures for deferring my enrollment? I would also appreciate it if you could inform me about any administrative steps or fees involved in transferring my position to the next term.

thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Kiranveer kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your evening course and the reason for your inability to continue (work commitments). You state your intention to defer your enrollment to the next term and appropriately ask for advice regarding the administrative procedures and potential fees. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an educational institution. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the problem to the proposed solution and finally the request for information. You use cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to that' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. The structure is consistent with standard formal letter-writing conventions.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. While some word choices are standard, you use some effective phrases such as 'pursue my career', 'defer my enrollment', and 'financially secured'. There is a minor spelling error ('circumsentances' instead of 'circumstances') and a minor grammatical slip ('I unable' instead of 'I am unable'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is appropriate for the context of a formal request to an institution.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as the missing verb in 'I unable to give' and the capitalization error in 'i recently started'. However, these are infrequent and do not cause confusion. The use of punctuation is generally good, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. You show a good command of sentence construction, which allows for clear and precise communication of your needs.
