IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to inform you, I am unable to attend evening course this term, so I would like to join the course next term.

Firstly, I would like to tell you I recently joined a exercise club due to my health conditions. I am suffering from a fatty liver because of less physical activity. Therefore, my doctor told me to start exercise as soon as possible to mitigate this problem.

Furthermore, my exams are coming next month. I have to spend maximum time to prepare for them. As this evening course is optional, so I think it would be great to continue this course next term because right now I am very busy.

Finally, I would really appreciate it, if could give me any alternate advice regarding this optional course. As a teacher you have more experience, please let me know what should I do .

Thank you for your attention on this matter, and hoping to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Poonam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your health and upcoming exams, state your intention to defer the course to the next term, and request advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal email. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific nature of the 'alternate advice' you are seeking, but overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. While the paragraphing is logical, the flow between some sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your health condition and the exam preparation could be improved with more sophisticated linking phrases. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mitigate', 'optional', and 'appreciate'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'joined a exercise club' (should be 'an exercise club') and 'spend maximum time' (a more natural collocation would be 'spend as much time as possible'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('attend evening course' should be 'attend the evening course') and some awkward phrasing ('if could give me' should be 'if you could give me'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score.
