IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. I want to talk about an evening course that I enrolled in recently. It is difficult for me to continue with the course and timing right now.
Actually, i was applying for part time jobs from few months to support my tuition expenses and now i got one. The company wants me to be available at evening times for four days which makes it difficult to balance with my course timing. I want to learn new things and gain some more knowledge from this course. I always wanted my career in this field of study and that is why i find it more interesting to study. But the timeframe and financial conditions are not allowing me to go with evening courses. If you could help me to find a way in this situation or enrolling into morning classes then it would be great and also opens new pathways for my future as well.
Thankyou for your time and consideration, I hope you will look into this matter. Let me know if you need any further information from me.
Thank you
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation regarding the new job, clearly stated your desire to postpone the course to the next term, and asked for advice regarding potential alternatives like morning classes. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between your current situation and your request for advice is more seamless. While the ideas are relevant, they could be slightly more developed to demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the introduction to the explanation, the request, and the closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Actually' and 'But' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block of text. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the explanation of your situation from your specific request for advice. This would make the letter much easier to navigate and demonstrate better control over organizational structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, such as 'tuition expenses', 'financial conditions', and 'pathways'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'from few months' (should be 'for a few months') and 'enrolling into' (should be 'enrolling in'). While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would be expected at a higher band level. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'i was applying' (should be 'I have been applying'), 'evening times' (should be 'the evenings'), and the inconsistent capitalization of 'i'. Additionally, the sentence 'If you could help me to find a way in this situation or enrolling into morning classes then it would be great' is slightly awkward in its construction. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement and punctuation will help you move up to a higher band.
