IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Sam Mistry and I am writing this to let you know about the evening course which I would like to take in next term.

As you already know, I am going to the University of Waterloo and it is scheduled on all weekdays. Afterwards, I have to prepare dinner and lunch for the following day. Moreover, I also need some time to do assignments given by the university. In the end, I do not have time for the our evening classes.

I am really interested in this course and what I am thinking is that I should enroll in the upcoming summer break. At that time, not only I can give extra time but also can concentrate fully without worrying about other things.

I would like you to help me out of this situation. I am asking for the advice about this situation and what you can do about it.

I am waiting for your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your situation regarding your university schedule, stated your intention to defer to the summer term, and requested advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of your schedule is a list of tasks rather than a cohesive narrative. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation flows more naturally and that your request for advice is more specific, perhaps by asking about refund policies or administrative procedures for deferral.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'In the end' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For example, 'In the end' is not the most natural choice for concluding a paragraph about your schedule. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'the our evening classes', which contains a grammatical error that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'enrolled in', 'scheduled', and 'concentrate fully'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'I am going to the University of Waterloo' (better: 'I am attending') and 'help me out of this situation' (better: 'advise me on how to handle this'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of collocations would help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'not only I can give extra time but also can concentrate' has incorrect word order (it should be 'not only can I give... but I can also concentrate'). There is also a redundant article in 'the our evening classes'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct placement of correlative conjunctions.
