IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you to deffer my marketing course from this term to next term. The course is about to start around 5th September. Unfortunately, I am quite occupied because of on-going work assignments. Additionally, several projects are on my disposal and deadlines are approaching. Due to this I am not able to give time to complete this course in the evening.

I would like to continue the same course but in the next term. I have already talked to my senior manager, hence he planned my schedule according to my classes. This course is important to learn about new marketing concepts and increase my knowledge.

I would appreciate it if you could advise me how to tackle this challenging situation in a better way. Please let me know the next steps to speed up this process at your own convenience.

Thank you for this opportunity, and I look forward to hearing a positive from your side.

Your sincereley,

Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work commitments, state your desire to defer the course to the next term, and politely request advice on the necessary procedures. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, and the letter follows a logical structure that fulfills the requirements of the task effectively. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the information provided is relevant and sufficient to meet the task objectives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the explanation of the situation to the proposed solution and finally the request for advice. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Due to this', and 'hence' to link your sentences and ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more refined. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a logical and easy-to-follow manner throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'quite occupied', 'approaching deadlines', and 'challenging situation' are used correctly. There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'deffer' (should be 'defer') and 'on my disposal' (should be 'at my disposal'). Additionally, 'hearing a positive' is slightly unnatural; 'hearing a positive response' would be more standard. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, showing a good level of control over formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over grammar, with most sentences being error-free. There are a few minor slips, such as 'Your sincereley' (should be 'Yours sincerely') and the phrasing 'request you to deffer', which is slightly awkward; 'request to defer' would be more natural. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any difficulty for the reader. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall grammatical control is strong enough to support clear communication throughout the letter.
