say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing to share an information about my decision on dropping a course till next term.
I recently occupied a full time job in hospital as a clerk which will assists me not only in being financially stable but also enhances my communication and organization skills. In addition to that, my job involves 8 hour shift between 2 PM to 10 PM which makes impossible situation for me to attend classes regularly. Consequently, I am planning to drop the course since my course require 100% attendance due to practicum requirements of the nursing.
Meanwhile, if college could provide me a flexible time in order to fulfill all the requirements of the course, in that case, I would capable to complete the course by attending morning lessons. Besides this, if you could faciliate me regarding an alternative option to cope with my current situation, that would be an excellent help to me.
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Krisha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain your new job situation and why it conflicts with the course schedule. You also state your intention to defer to the next term and ask for advice regarding potential alternatives. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the 'practicum requirements' is slightly more integrated into the flow of the letter, as the transition between your job description and the attendance policy is a little abrupt. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'Consequently', and 'Meanwhile' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, 'Meanwhile' is not the most natural choice to introduce the request for a schedule change. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the situation from the request. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words that flow more naturally within the context of a formal request.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financially stable', 'practicum requirements', and 'facilitate'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'share an information' (should be 'share some information' or 'provide information') and 'occupied a full time job' (should be 'started' or 'took on'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations. Expanding your range of formal business-related vocabulary would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which will assists me' (should be 'assist'), 'makes impossible situation' (should be 'makes it an impossible situation'), and 'I would capable to' (should be 'I would be capable of'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and articles. Focusing on proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
