IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir\Madam,
I am writing regarding the evening course in which I am currently enrolled. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected increase in my workload and family responsibilities, I no longer have enough time to attend classes regularly or complete the assignments to an appropriate standard. Therefore, I do not think I can continue the course this term.
I cannot continue this semester with the evening course because,my parents are going for a work trip and they will be gone for 4 months and i have to be in charge of my siblings till when they get back from their work trip. And also my working time is clashing with the evening course and i will not be able to make it on time for the evening class.
I would appreciate it if my evening course could be moved to the next semester due to,I will be busy and i would not be able to have time for majority of the class and they would affect my attendance and results.
I would want your advise whether i should move the evening course to the next semester or if there is an opening that I could the evening course in the morning or i could do it online. And it would not affect my result or CGPA.
I would be expecting your response.Thank you.
Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your situation clearly, stated your desire to defer to the next term, and asked for advice regarding alternative study modes. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive; for example, you mention your busy schedule and inability to attend in the first paragraph and then repeat similar justifications in the second and third paragraphs. To improve, ensure each paragraph introduces a new, distinct point rather than restating previous information. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'However', which help the flow of ideas. However, there are instances where the progression is slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the transition between the second and third paragraphs. The use of punctuation is inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'course because,my parents'). Improving the use of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure will help you achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'unexpected increase in my workload' and 'appropriate standard'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I would want your advise' (should be 'advice') and 'I could the evening course' (missing a verb like 'take'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more sophisticated collocations and ensuring correct word forms will enhance your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and sentence construction. For instance, 'I would appreciate it if my evening course could be moved to the next semester due to,I will be busy' is grammatically incorrect. Additionally, there are issues with capitalization and missing articles. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic sentence structure errors and ensuring that complex sentences are correctly punctuated and linked.
