IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or madam,

I am writing to inform you that I have recently been enrolled in an evening post-graduation course of Advance Data management; however due to my tight schedule, I would be unable to attend this session. Therefore, I would appreciate your advice regarding this.

Initially, when I was submitting my application, I had discussed with you about my work situation and forthcoming. Due to the expansion of our company, I have to travel abroad and guide new employees as being the senior most Data Manager. It would be not possible for me to take this term.

In addition to that, I have discussed with my colleagues and parents, they have suggested that I should join the next coming session instead of this one due to unavailability. Therefore, I have decided to take their opinion as it would be inconvenient for me to attend the educational course.

Nevertheless, I still have my reservations, and I would appreciate it if you could suggest something. You have been a mentor for me since my college-age.

I am looking forward to your intellectual advice, and would appreciate a quick response from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ayaz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding your work commitments, stated your desire to defer the course to the next term, and sought advice from the recipient. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the transition between the explanation and the request for advice could be more seamless. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your position and the reasons behind your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your professional situation and the specific course requirements is slightly more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'In addition to that', and 'Nevertheless' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, starting two consecutive sentences with 'Therefore' reduces the flow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different aspects of your request. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than relying on a fixed structure for each paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'forthcoming', 'expansion', and 'inconvenient'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'post-graduation course of Advance Data management' is slightly awkward; 'postgraduate course in Advanced Data Management' would be more natural. Similarly, 'since my college-age' is not a standard idiomatic expression. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and idiomatic phrasing to achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have been enrolled' (when 'I recently enrolled' is more direct), 'it would be not possible' (word order error), and 'guide new employees as being the senior most' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences are slightly clunky. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not cause confusion for the reader, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed to move into the 7.0+ range.
