Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear professor,
I am writing to request that i would like to take my economic class for next semester a long side my software technician program.
Having said that i am facing difficulties with networking practical . As a result, my tutor guided me extra practical classes for better understanding in cisco configuration. My other course's class are conducted in morning so with obvious option i had to take practical classes in evening.
Additionally, economic class time are changed to 5pm which is conflicting with Lab timing. Due to that i missed my couple of lab sessions which made me stress and confuse about my lecture.
I would appriciate if you can tranfor me into morning class for economic or cancel my evening class for this semester and enroll me for next team. i would like to hear your eariest advice to choose best possible option at your convienace.
yours faithful,
neha.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the situation, stating the desired outcome, and asking for advice. However, the development of these points is somewhat hampered by unclear explanations. For instance, the connection between the 'networking practical' and the 'economic class' is confusingly phrased, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logic of the scheduling conflict. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the lack of precision in describing the situation prevents it from reaching a higher band. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request, though the structure could be more refined to ensure the reader fully understands the constraints.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the phrase 'Having said that' is used incorrectly to introduce a new point rather than a contrast. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'my tutor guided me extra practical classes', where the relationship between the tutor and the classes is not explicitly linked. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by these minor lapses in cohesive control.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'tranfor me into morning class' instead of 'transfer me to the morning class' and 'made me stress and confuse' instead of 'made me stressed and confused'. The student attempts to use formal language, but the execution is inconsistent. Spelling errors, such as 'appriciate', 'eariest', and 'convienace', are frequent enough to be noticeable, though they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include missing articles ('take my economic class'), incorrect verb forms ('economic class time are changed'), and subject-verb agreement errors. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. While the meaning remains generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limits the score. The student would benefit from proofreading to address these recurring slips in tense and word order.
