Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear student body,
My name is Shubhkaran singh. I currently study in kpu university and I am doing Accounting diploma. I am writing this letter to inform you that I won’t be able to continue my Accounting 3310 course this semester due to my busy schedule. I have already taken 4 courses and I thought I can work this through but due to work in the evening I am unable to take this class.
Although, it is my mistake but can you help me drop this course. So, that i can work on my other courses because i don’t want to fail other classes. In the next term i will only have 3 courses left which will make it easier for me to study and complete my diploma without any worries.
Lastly, I want to drop this course but i don’t know how and whom to contact. So if you could guide me through all the process that will be very helpful for me because i don’t want to make any errors which might cause any problem with my graduation.
I will be waiting for your reply.
Thank you for your time and help.
Kind regards
Shubhkaran singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your situation regarding the Accounting 3310 course and the conflict with your work schedule. You state your intention to postpone the course until the next term and appropriately ask for guidance on the withdrawal process. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request, although the salutation 'Dear student body' is slightly unusual for an administrative request, which would be better directed to an 'Academic Advisor' or 'Registrar's Office'. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your specific needs and the context of your request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the explanation of the problem to the proposed solution and finally the request for assistance. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although', 'Lastly', and 'So', to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are less mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your meaning. Phrases like 'busy schedule' and 'guide me through the process' are natural and appropriate. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive, relying on common words. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise or academic terminology, such as 'academic workload' or 'administrative procedure'. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'work this through' instead of 'manage this workload', but these do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I', 'kpu' instead of 'KPU'). There are also minor errors in sentence construction, such as 'Although, it is my mistake but can you help me...', where the use of 'Although' and 'but' in the same sentence is redundant. Despite these errors, your writing is generally accurate enough that the reader is never confused. Improving your control over complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic errors would enhance your score.
