IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello Sandro,

I writing this letter to you to let you know that I will not be coming tomorrow evening for the cooking class as I have decided to discontinue the course for this term and will begin in upcoming term.

I know this was a hard decision for me, but this is true I am not able to continue this course because i do not get a proper time for theory and practical, moreover we are very well know that this course requires complete dedication and time to practice. But due to my work, it is very difficult to manage both work and study at the same time. And i have realized that this might get affect either work and study.

I would like to complete this course and get a certification in next term, so I can add this skill to my resume and make a stronger profile.

Please advise me on this situation as I am not able to decide the further steps. I believe you could guide me for the next steps better which would help me to take a well informed decisions about my course.

I will be waiting for your reply and guidance.

Kind Regards,

Simran Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your inability to continue the cooking course due to work commitments, state your intention to defer to the next term, and politely request advice on the necessary steps. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an instructor. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the conflict between work and study is slightly more concise to allow for a more natural flow, but overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'moreover' and 'therefore' (implied), though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between explaining the difficulty of the course and the impact on your work could be improved by using more sophisticated cohesive ties rather than simple conjunctions like 'and'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'discontinue', 'dedication', and 'certification'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do not get a proper time' instead of 'do not have sufficient time' and 'we are very well know' instead of 'we are well aware'. While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight a need for more precise usage. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I writing this letter' (missing auxiliary verb), 'in upcoming term' (missing article), and 'this might get affect' (incorrect verb form). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that complex verb phrases are constructed accurately. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will be key to reaching a higher band.
