IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to explain my current situation regarding the evening course I recently enrolled in. Unfortunately, due to my increasing work commitments, I am finding it difficult to attend the classes regularly and keep up with the coursework.

When I enrolled, I expected to have enough free time to complete the course. However, my working hours have recently increased, and I am now often required to work late. As a result, I am unable to attend the evening classes consistently and I am concerned that continuing under these circumstances would affect my studies.

I would therefore like to postpone my studies and enroll in the same course next term, when I expect to have a more manageable schedule. I am very interested in completing the course and would not like to withdraw from it permanently.

Could you please advise me on the procedure for postponing my enrolment? I would also appreciate it if you could let me know whether I need to complete any forms or pay an additional fee to transfer my enrolment to the next term.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Gagandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your work commitments, state your intention to postpone the course to the next term, and ask specific, relevant questions about the procedure and potential fees. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the introduction of the problem to the proposed solution and finally to the request for information. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'therefore' are used naturally to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal context. Phrases like 'increasing work commitments', 'manageable schedule', and 'transfer my enrolment' are precise and well-chosen. The language is natural and conveys your meaning accurately without any noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is functional and effective, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high-level score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the response. You utilize a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('when I expect to have...') and subordinate clauses ('I am concerned that continuing...'), with no errors. Punctuation is used correctly, and the control over verb tenses is consistent. The majority of your sentences are error-free, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
