IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request you a little amendment in my schedule of course. I have enrolled in an evening course for this term but due to some unavoidable personal circumstances that are unforeseen I am afraid I will not be able to attend this course in recent term. Due to my personal commitments with my family and emergency nature of this situation I will not be able to further continue with this course.

As far as, my studies and morning classes are concerned I will try my best to continue them without any distraction. I know that I have to be more concentrated on this term that's why I am trying to avail all the available time to my main study subjects.

I would also request you to guide me what to do in this situation so that my academic term is not compromised. Moreover, I would also like to request you to allow me to cancel my enrollment in this term and apply for further terms in future.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely

Aiman Irfan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the situation regarding your inability to attend the evening course due to personal commitments. You state your desire to defer your studies to the next term and appropriately ask for guidance on the administrative process. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an institution. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your request and the reasons behind it. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and all requirements of the task are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As far as... are concerned' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow. While the structure is sound, a slightly wider range of cohesive devices would elevate the flow of the text further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'unavoidable personal circumstances' and 'academic term is not compromised' are used correctly and fit the formal context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'request you a little amendment' (which should be 'request an amendment to') and 'further continue' (which is redundant). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and maintains a professional tone throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'unforeseen I am afraid' (which lacks a connector or punctuation) and 'concentrated on this term' (should be 'concentrated on my studies this term'). Additionally, 'request you to guide me what to do' is slightly awkward; 'ask for your advice on how to proceed' would be more natural. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. A greater focus on sentence variety and proofreading for minor errors would improve your score.
