explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am Gurleen Kaur student in Administrative assistant diploma in your college. I am writing to express my concern regarding my spreadsheet course.
Actually, I already have five courses in this semester for morning classes as I am an international student therefore, I also do part-time job in the evening to manage my expenses. The course I am talking about is for evening batch consequently, I will not be able to study this course in this semester.
As a solution, I have opinion that I can take this course in the upcoming semester as I only have 4 courses left for my last term. To put long story in short, this will not only help me to having much burden of studies as well as I can easily handle my study and work on the same time.
Moreover, you have more knowledge about this problem as you are expert of advising these kind of issues. So, I will prefer to take your advice for this situation so it will not impact my study.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Gurleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explained your situation regarding your heavy course load and part-time job, proposed a logical solution to defer the course, and requested advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that your explanation of the situation is slightly more concise to allow for more sophisticated development of your request for advice. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the reader is fully informed of your needs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'To put long story in short'. Additionally, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words rather than relying on simple conjunctions. The progression of ideas is clear, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'express my concern' and 'upcoming semester'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have opinion that' (should be 'I am of the opinion that') and 'having much burden of studies' (should be 'reducing my study burden'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal academic collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am Gurleen Kaur student' (missing article 'a'), 'I also do part-time job' (missing article 'a'), and 'on the same time' (should be 'at the same time'). There are also issues with preposition usage and verb forms, such as 'help me to having'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
