IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that i recently enrolled in winter term. However, i cannot continue my studies during this semester under some circumstances.

Unfortunately, my fees is due for this semester and i got an email that i have to drop the courses. Currently, my financial condition is not acceptable. So i am planning to take a term break and do work as full time worker for earning substantial amount of tuition fees and I will enroll in next term. This will not only provide me opportunity for working more than 24 hour but also i can spend in recreational activities rather than studies.

I sincerely appreciated if you assist me for my libarery entry while i am on my term break.

I look forward for your considerable suggestions for my self study. Although i hope you revert back on your earlier convenience.

your faithfully,

Amritpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining the situation, stating the intention to defer, and asking for advice. However, the development of these points is somewhat inconsistent. The explanation regarding financial difficulties is clear, but the mention of 'recreational activities' is slightly confusing in the context of needing to work full-time to pay tuition. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks some of the necessary professional polish required for a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader is left in no doubt about your intentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the financial situation and the plan to work could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disconnected. Improving the variety of linking words (e.g., using 'consequently' or 'furthermore' instead of 'so') would help the flow of the letter significantly. Overall, the structure is sufficient to convey the message clearly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors. Phrases like 'my fees is due' (should be 'fees are due') and 'do work as full time worker' are unnatural. The term 'revert back' is a common redundancy, and 'libarery' contains a spelling error. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Focusing on collocations and standard formal phrasing will improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('my fees is'), article usage ('the' is missing before 'winter term'), and awkward phrasing ('I sincerely appreciated if you assist me'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and the capitalization of 'i'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
