IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to withdraw my seat from the advance chemical engineering reaction course (32114), as I would not be able to attend the classes due to my ongoing commitment to my part time job.

Firstly, I have been studying as an international student at the University of Ottawa for the last two years. I am currently working as part-time store associate at Walmart to fund my monthly rent and grocery expenses. The course I have enrolled into includes classes at 7 PM on Tuesday and Friday, which has similar timing with my working schedule.

Secondly, I would love to be process engineer in near future and this subject includes fundamental processes and equations, which I would not like to learn. To overcome this situation, I would like you to withdraw my admission from this subject. Therefore, I am enrolling into other subject named as Fluid Mechanics.

However, this subject is available in upcoming summer term 2027. I would request you to register me for the summer classes. Should your require any other information or documentation about my admission or student number, I would be happy to assist you further.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Neel Desai.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the situation regarding your work schedule, stated your intention to withdraw and defer to the summer term, and requested advice/assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, there is a significant logical error in the second paragraph: you state that you would not like to learn the fundamental processes of the course, which contradicts your earlier statement that you want to be a process engineer. This makes your reasoning slightly confusing for the reader. Ensure that your supporting ideas consistently align with your stated goals to improve clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' to guide the reader through your points. While the progression is generally clear, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the reference to 'this subject' in the second paragraph is ambiguous because you mention two different courses (Chemical Engineering and Fluid Mechanics) in close proximity. Using more precise referencing would improve the flow and ensure the reader understands exactly which course you are referring to in each instance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'ongoing commitment', 'fund my monthly rent', and 'assist you further'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'withdraw my seat' (usually 'withdraw from the course') and 'similar timing with' (should be 'conflicts with'). The phrase 'which I would not like to learn' is likely a mistake where you meant 'which I would like to learn' or 'which I need to learn'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'Should you require any other information'. There are several grammatical slips, including 'I would not be able to' (should be 'I am not able to' or 'I will not be able to'), 'enrolled into' (should be 'enrolled in'), and 'working schedule' (should be 'work schedule'). Additionally, 'I would love to be process engineer' is missing an article ('a process engineer'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your focus on article usage and prepositional phrases will help elevate your score.
