ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to inform you that I have enrolled in evening cooking course at your college, but unfortunately, I am no longer able to continue it because of my busy work schedule.
when I joined that course at that time i had a plenty of free time to join the classes and for completing my assignments. However now my working hours has been increased due to festive season and now I have to work for longer hours several days a week. As a result, I am unable to focuse on my studies.
I would therefore like to change my enrollment from this term to next term as then I will have less work responsibilites and I can make better balance between my work and study schedule.
For that I want you to please assist me about the procedure for transfering and apart from this any other suggest to reslove my situation.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Jaspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly explain the situation, mentioning that you enrolled in an evening cooking course at the college but can no longer continue due to your busy work schedule. You also state what you would like to do, which is to change your enrollment to next term, and you successfully ask for advice and assistance regarding the transfer procedure. The purpose of the letter is immediately clear and sustained throughout the response, adopting a semi-formal tone appropriate for communicating with a college representative. All parts of the prompt are addressed naturally and fully, meeting the requirements for this criterion well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with a logical organisation and progression from explaining the situation to requesting a transfer and advice. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as the background explanation, the desired outcome, and the final request for assistance. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, for instance using 'However', 'As a result', and 'I would therefore like to', which help connect your thoughts. However, there are minor repetitive elements in transitions, such as 'and now' repeated closely together in the second paragraph. Overall, the flow is coherent and supports the purpose of the letter effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases like 'busy work schedule', 'working hours has been increased', and 'work responsibilities'. While there are a few lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations—such as writing 'cooking course' missing an article ('an evening cooking course') and 'transfering' (misspelled as transfering) or 'suggest' instead of 'suggestion'—these errors do not impede communication. The tone remains polite and suitable for an educational institution, and the vocabulary choice is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional or causal relationships ('As a result, I am unable to focuse on my studies'). You demonstrate good control over basic grammatical forms, but there are some noticeable errors present. For example, there is a subject-verb agreement issue ('my working hours has been increased' should be 'have been increased'), a spelling error ('focuse' instead of 'focus'), and a punctuation or capitalization slip ('when I joined that course at that time i had'). Furthermore, some sentences run together or lack precise punctuation. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded.
