Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear sir or madam,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inform you of my intention to withdraw from your comuter program in the evening from next semester. After careful consideration, I have made this decision with great reluctance.
Due to recent changes in my work schedule and an increase in my job responsibilities for my current full time position. I find myself no longer able to attend the classes or complete the course requirements as planned. For this reason, I have decided to discontinue my participation in this course to avoid any disruption to the class and to focus on my professional commitments.
I truly appreciate the opportunity to learn under your guidance and the support provided by the institution. I hope to reconsider this course in the future when it will alighn with my schedule.
Thankyou for your understanding. Please let me know if there are any formal steps I need to complete for this withdrawal.
Yours faithfully,
Sonali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explained your situation and why you cannot continue the evening computer program due to changes in your work schedule and increased job responsibilities. You also clearly stated what you would like to do regarding your studies, which is to withdraw from the current semester and take the course next term instead, and you appropriately asked for advice regarding the formal steps required for the withdrawal. The tone is polite and well-suited for a formal letter to an educational institution. All aspects of the task are addressed naturally and clearly, demonstrating a strong understanding of the communicative purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically sequenced with a clear overall structure, starting with an appropriate salutation, moving smoothly through the explanation of the situation and the requested action, and ending with a standard formal sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body explaining the reasons, and the concluding remarks. Cohesive devices are managed well, such as 'For this reason' and 'Please let me know', creating a smooth flow between ideas. Referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily follow your message without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a formal letter. Phrases such as 'careful consideration', 'great reluctance', 'professional commitments', and 'formal steps' show a good grasp of formal register. However, there are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'comuter' instead of 'computer' and 'alighn' instead of 'align'. Despite these slips, your vocabulary choice is precise enough to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'After careful consideration, I have made this decision with great reluctance.' There is a minor punctuation and sentence boundary error in the second paragraph, where a sentence is incorrectly fragmented: '...for my current full time position. I find myself...' This should be joined with a comma rather than a full stop. Other than this, most of your sentences are accurate, and your control of verb tenses and modals is generally solid.
