IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you that, Unfortunately, I am unable to continue attending an evening business management course, I recently enrolled in on September 14.
The main reason for not able to attend an evening course is because I have been given recently extra responsibilities at my work, which make me require to stay late for several evenings a week. As a result, I am finding it difficult to attend the course as well as to keep up with the course work.
Although I am not able to continue attending classes at present, I would like to resume my studies next term when I have more time available. I am still very interested in this particular course and would not like to give up.
Given my current circumstances, I would appreciate your kind advice on how to proceed. I would like to post-pone my studies to the next semester.
I am looking forward to your prompt response.
Kind regards,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the writer effectively explains the situation by stating they enrolled in an evening business management course on September 14, and clearly outlines why they cannot continue due to receiving extra responsibilities at work that require staying late. Second, the student explicitly says what they would like to do about their studies, expressing a clear desire to resume next term and to postpone their current studies to the next semester. Finally, the writer appropriately asks for advice by stating, 'Given my current circumstances, I would appreciate your kind advice on how to proceed.' The tone is consistently polite and professional, perfectly suited for a formal letter to an institution. All aspects of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant and fully developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Ideas are grouped into appropriate paragraphs, starting with the main announcement, followed by the specific reasons, the proposed solution, the request for advice, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'As a result', and 'Given my current circumstances' are used effectively to connect ideas and establish clear relationships between clauses. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introductory statement, body elaboration, and conclusion cleanly. While referencing and linking are generally smooth, there is occasional slight clunkiness in phrasing, but overall cohesion is well managed throughout the short text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate lexical range for a general correspondence task. They successfully incorporate functional business and academic vocabulary such as 'recently enrolled', 'extra responsibilities', 'resume my studies', and 'current circumstances'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as writing 'not able to attend an evening course is because I have been given recently extra responsibilities', where word order is slightly unnatural. Additionally, the phrase 'post-pone' is incorrectly hyphenated. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is more than sufficient to convey the intended message clearly and precisely to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'which make me require to stay late' and 'Although I am not able to continue attending classes at present...'). However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as punctuation issues in the opening sentence ('I am writing to inform you that, Unfortunately, I am unable...') and awkward verb phrasing in 'which make me require to stay late', which should ideally be 'which require me to stay late' or 'which make it necessary for me to stay late'. Punctuation is generally functional, but misplaced commas occasionally disrupt the flow. The errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the grammar score from reaching higher bands.
