IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you today to inform you about my disability to continue the general education evening course, and request for guidance regarding the same.

The university has modified the non-compulsary internship for this semester to be mandatory all of a sudden. According to the coursework coordinator, it is crucial to gain hands on experience related to my field. The experience will prepare me to step in the real world career path confidently. As per the passing requirements of the course, I will need at least 4 months of paid internship experience. In case of failure in doing this, my credentials for the course will be invalidated.

Although I joined the evening course to complete it during this semester, so the next one can be light on me academically, I am sorry to let you know that I will have to drop out. I spoke to the coursework coordinator regarding this general education course, and she informed me that it is possible to get it done the next semester. I considered the situation, and I think it is best if I continue with the completion of the general education course next semester.

However, I would appreciate any advice from your side regarding this issue since I believe you know the best about this course.

Best regards,

Shruti Rathod.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully covers all bullet points of the task prompt in an appropriate semi-formal tone. The student clearly explains the situation regarding the sudden mandatory internship and why they cannot continue the evening course at this time. They also clearly state their intention to take the course next term instead, as confirmed by their discussion with the coursework coordinator. Furthermore, they successfully ask for advice about what to do next. The ideas are well-developed and sustained throughout the letter, presenting a coherent and relevant scenario that completely satisfies the requirements of General Task 1. There are no omissions, and the purpose of the letter is evident from the opening paragraph to the closing sign-off, meriting a high band for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into well-defined paragraphs that follow a natural progression from opening and explanation to action and request for advice. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct communicative function. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'According to', and 'In case of' are utilized effectively to connect ideas. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical, such as 'regarding the same' in the opening paragraph, which prevents the response from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is logical and consistent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional and less common phrases such as 'credentials for the course will be invalidated', 'academically', and 'coursework coordinator'. Word choice is generally appropriate for a semi-formal request letter, though there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'disability to continue' instead of 'inability to continue'. Spelling is accurate throughout the text, and the vocabulary employed allows the writer to convey their message with adequate precision and style, despite a slight lack of complete naturalness in one or two isolated instances.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses such as 'Although I joined the evening course to complete it during this semester... I am sorry to let you know that I will have to drop out.' The majority of sentences are grammatically sound, and punctuation is handled well. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'step in the real world career path' missing a hyphen or preposition adjustments, but these do not impede communication. The control over grammar is strong enough to demonstrate a solid grasp of complex sentence forms with only occasional non-systematic errors.
