Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this mail will finds you well. I recently started evening cookery course with you. I am writing to express my problem about continuing this course. Furthermore, I am very busy in the evening because i am working full-time as a CCA. Its really hard for me to get time for myself because i am working day shifts as well as doing evening course with you. I am really interested in the course and am enjoying it because i started to learn a lot of things. However, my main issue is I do not have enough time. I just wanted to request you to enroll me in this course in next term. Becasue, I can not reduce my work hours due to high expenses. In next term, I will be financially stable then i can work part time and continue this course with you. Moreover, I will really appreciate your help if you can give me some suggestion to cope up with this problem. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Yours Faithfully,
Sonali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, the situation is clearly explained, noting that the student has enrolled in an evening cookery course and is too busy to continue due to working full-time as a CCA on day shifts. Second, the student states what they would like to do about their studies by requesting to enroll in the course next term instead. Third, advice is explicitly sought by asking the reader for suggestions on how to cope with the situation. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to an educational institution. All ideas are relevant and adequately developed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The opening salutation and closing are standard and correct. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Moreover', although some transitions like 'Becasue' are mechanically placed or punctuated awkwardly with a full stop before the conjunction. Paragraphing is noticeably absent, as the entire body of the letter is written as a single block of text. Breaking the text into distinct paragraphs for the explanation, the request, and the advice would significantly improve the structural flow. Based on these factors, the response achieves a Band 6.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday situations and personal circumstances. Phrases such as 'full-time', 'financially stable', and 'consideration' show a decent working lexicon. However, there are some repetitive patterns and awkward word choices, such as 'express my problem about continuing' rather than 'express my difficulty in continuing'. There are also minor spelling and capitalisation issues ('Becasue', lowercase 'i'). The lexical range is sufficient for precision on familiar topics, but lacks the flexibility and less common phrasings seen at higher bands. This performance sits comfortably at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'because' and 'if'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. Examples include 'I hope this mail will finds you well' (incorrect verb form after modal), lowercase 'i' used independently multiple times, and 'Its really hard' missing the apostrophe in 'It's'. There is also a run-on sentence structure in 'In next term, I will be financially stable then i can work part time'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the response from reaching a higher band. A score of 6.0 is appropriate here.
