IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to your respected institution regarding on the evening course I enrolled last month which will commence on 6th of October 2026, Unfortunately I cannot continue with my marketing course due to conflict of my schedule timing.

I was recently promoted as a manager at the restaurant I am working, however, the owner assigned me to evening shift for this coming October and it’s the same timing with my enrolled course. I would like to inquire to your administration if it is possible to cancel and take it on the next enrollment. I would appreciate for any advice you can share regarding this matter because I am really interested for taking this course.

Please let me know if it possible to refund or transfer my enrolled course to next semester. Your prompt response is highly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The situation is clearly explained, with the writer noting that she enrolled in a marketing course starting on 6th of October 2026 but cannot continue due to a schedule conflict. The desired action is explicitly stated: she wishes to cancel or transfer the course to the next enrollment. Finally, she asks for advice and inquires about the possibility of a refund. The tone is appropriate for a formal request letter, and the purpose is communicated effectively throughout, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It follows standard formal letter conventions, opening with an appropriate salutation and closing. Basic cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'however', 'therefore', and referencing pronouns. However, paragraphing could be better managed, as the main body is condensed into a single block that covers multiple functions. Separating the explanation of the situation, the desired action, and the request for advice into distinct paragraphs would improve the visual and logical structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'commence', 'adminstration' (spelled administration), and 'prompt response'. There are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'conflict of my schedule timing' instead of 'schedule conflict' and 'interested for taking' instead of 'interested in taking'. Despite these minor lexical errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as comma splices ('...commence on 6th of October 2026, Unfortunately...') and prepositional errors ('regarding on the evening course'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the intended meaning of each sentence remains understandable to the reader.
