IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Course Administrator,
I am writing to inform you of a necessary change regarding my enrollment in the Evening Web Design Principles course.
Regrettably, I am no longer able to continue attending the course this term due to unexpected changes at my workplace. My company has recently taken on a major client project, which requires me to work late hours and travel frequently over the coming months. Consequently, I cannot give this course the time and focus it requires.
Instead of dropping out permanently, I would like to defer my studies and join the same course next term when my workload normalises.
Could you please advise me on the procedure for deferring my enrollment? Specifically, I would like to know if my current tuition fees can be transferred to next term, or if I need to submit a formal application for a deferral.
Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to your guidance.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Taylor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The letter clearly explains the situation and the reason for discontinuing the course this term, stating that 'unexpected changes at my workplace' and a 'major client project' require late hours and travel. Furthermore, the writer clearly expresses what they would like to do about their studies by stating a desire to 'defer my studies and join the same course next term.' Finally, the letter successfully asks for advice regarding the situation by inquiring about the procedure, specifically asking 'if my current tuition fees can be transferred' or if a formal application is needed. The tone is appropriately formal and polite throughout, perfectly matching the requirements of a general correspondence task. All parts are well-developed and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement of purpose through the explanation, proposed solution, and final inquiry. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct communicative function: introducing the issue, detailing the background reasons, stating the preferred action, and asking for specific advice. Cohesive devices are managed well, using appropriate transitional phrases such as 'Consequently' and 'Instead of dropping out permanently' to link ideas smoothly. Reference words are handled accurately, ensuring the reader easily follows the progression of thought from the problem to the desired outcome.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The candidate employs a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate to a formal request letter. Less common and precise lexical items are used skilfully throughout the response, such as 'enrollment', 'Regrettably', 'normalises', 'procedure', and 'deferring'. Word choice and collocations are natural and accurate, as seen in expressions like 'major client project' and 'formal application for a deferral.' There are no spelling or word-choice errors, and the vocabulary precisely communicates the intended meaning with an appropriate formal tone suitable for a course administrator.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a wide range of grammatical structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The candidate successfully incorporates complex sentences with subordinate and relative clauses, such as 'which requires me to work late hours and travel frequently' and 'I would like to know if my current tuition fees can be transferred to next term, or if I need to submit a formal application'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and control over punctuation and tense consistency is excellent. The grammar never impedes communication and reflects a very high level of control.
