IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you that I would be unable to take this course in this year. Because of work schedule, it will be difficult for me to manage study and work together.

When I enrolled for an evening course, I had morning shifts only. Yesterday, my manager lettered me that now I have to work for night shifts. As a result, I would like to cancel the enrollment from this course.

However, I would like to study online during afternoons. I do not want to stop my study for one year. So, I decided to do it by myself. I have planned fix hours for studying.

Is there anything else I can do it for my study? You guidance can help me to improve my planning. Also, I would appreciate it if you could suggest some books related to this program that I can refer to while studying.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding my request for books. I hope to get a quick response. Thank you!

Yours faithfully,

Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the prompt well. You successfully explained the situation regarding your work schedule change, stated what you would like to do about your studies by proposing to take the course next term or study online, and asked for advice and textbook recommendations. Your ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, fulfilling the bullet points of a general task 1 letter. To achieve a higher band, the development of ideas could be slightly more cohesive and natural, particularly regarding the transition between wanting to cancel and then deciding to study online independently. However, all communicative requirements of the task have been fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear logical organization with appropriate paragraphing. You use basic paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, body points, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'Also' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter makes sense to the reader. To improve further, a wider variety of cohesive phrases and smoother linking between sentences would elevate the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, with clear attempts to use less common items such as 'enrolled', 'cancel the enrollment', and 'refer to'. There are some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as saying 'manager lettered me' instead of 'informed me' or 'notified me', and 'do it for my study' instead of 'do for my studies'. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, although more precise phrasing would strengthen the lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'When I enrolled for an evening course, I had morning shifts only' and 'I would appreciate it if you could suggest some books related to this program'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'I would be unable to take this course in this year' (instead of 'this year'), 'night shifts' (instead of 'night shifts'), and 'Is there anything else I can do it for my study?' (unnecessary 'it'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate.
