Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully explain the personal situation regarding your grandfather's health and the need to move, state your wish to defer your studies to the next term to preserve your college seat in the electrical trade course, and ask for advice on alternative ways to keep up with your studies. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an educational institution, opening with 'Dear Sir / madam' and closing with 'Your's faithfully'. While the ideas are relevant, some parts of the explanation and the request for advice are slightly repetitive or lack full elaboration. Nevertheless, all requirements of the prompt are satisfactorily met, which corresponds to the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, the personal situation, the desired course of action, the request for advice, and the sign-off appropriately. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Words like 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' are overused at the beginnings of paragraphs to link ideas, and some sentences feature awkward referencing, such as 'which ramifications to my study this time.' The progression of ideas is generally clear, but sentence-level connections occasionally hinder smooth reading. This level of organization and cohesive device usage aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'apprise', 'predicament', 'defer', and 'quandrum'. However, there are notable lexical errors and imprecise word choices throughout the text, including spelling errors like 'writting' instead of 'writing' and 'quandrum' instead of 'quandary', as well as grammatical collocations like 'necessitates to defer' and 'loosing' instead of 'losing'. While these inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0 because they cause noticeable difficulty and highlight a limited control over word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several frequent grammatical errors, such as comma splices and incorrect clause structures (e.g., 'Since, I enrolled in this term but unfortunately there is a quandrum comes' and 'simultaneously I tried my best to continue my studies'). Furthermore, capitalization and punctuation errors are present, such as 'Your's faithfully' and lowercase starting letters in names like 'sonam'. Although the meaning remains understandable despite these errors, the high frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.
