IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apologise for selecting the course in the evening course at the wrong time. I had started doing a part-time job in walmart to cover my daily expenditure and rent. As per the policy of walmart, we need to give a fix availibility for through out the term.
I do have morning classes everyday, So, I won't be able to share my morning schedule with them. While selecting the evening class, I didn't realise that. The only reason for doing a part-time job is I don't to be dependent on parents. As a reason, it is not possible for me to continue this course.
Currently, I am planning to continue this course in the next intake. Where I can have a perfect schedule and both of this won't conflict with each other. Apart from that, I would like to have your opinion in this situation. If your advice can find a perfect and suitable solution for me. I would like to go with that as well.
I hope you take this letter in consideration, I am looking for a positive response for it.
Your Faithfully,
Rushi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The writer clearly explains the situation regarding their evening course enrollment and why they cannot continue due to a newly acquired part-time job at Walmart and fixed availability constraints. Furthermore, the writer clearly states what they would like to do, which is to postpone and take the course in the next term or intake, and appropriately asks for advice or the administrator's opinion on how to handle the situation. The tone is suitable for a formal request letter, and the purpose is apparent from the beginning. All parts of the prompt are addressed well, demonstrating a clear understanding of General Training Task 1 requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter is generally well-organized and easy to follow. Ideas are divided into logical paragraphs, with an opening salutation, a clear explanation of the problem, a statement of future intent, a request for advice, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While selecting the evening class', 'Apart from that', and 'Currently'. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and sentence linkage, particularly with sentence fragments like 'Where I can have a perfect schedule and both of this won't conflict with each other.' This demonstrates a Band 6 level of cohesive control, where paragraphing and overall logical flow are present, but occasional structural cohesion faults exist.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's situation. Words and phrases like 'part-time job', 'daily expenditure', 'availability', and 'schedule' are used appropriately. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'selecting the course in the evening course at the wrong time' (repetition/awkward collocation) and 'take this letter in consideration' (preposition error for 'into consideration'). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but word choice errors and spelling slips (e.g., 'availibility', 'through out') prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The range is sufficient for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures and adverbial clauses ('While selecting the evening class, I didn't realise that'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues that disrupt the flow. For example, there is a sentence fragment ('Where I can have a perfect schedule...') and comma splices or inappropriate terminal punctuation ('I do have morning classes everyday, So, I won't be able...'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement and tense inconsistencies, such as 'I don't to be dependent' (missing verb) and 'as a reason' instead of 'for this reason'. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.
