IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to formally request the cancellation of the English language course which is due to begin next month. I enrolled in this course two months ago and was looking forward to improving my communication skills for the future.

Unfortunately, I have been offered a paramountly important work assignment which requires me to travel for the next few months. As a result, I will not be able to attend the classes regularly in the evening. I would be grateful if you could cancel my booking and kindly let me know whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards a future course.

I am still keen to join your course in several months once my schedule becomes less demanding. Could you please advise me about any part-time course that is likely to happen in the coming months? I would particularly appreciate the information regarding course fees, dates, and enrolment procedures.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Hadid

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task prompt, earning a strong rating. You clearly explained the situation by stating that you enrolled in the English language course two months ago, and you provided a valid reason for discontinuing due to an unexpected work assignment requiring travel. Furthermore, you stated what you would like to do by asking to cancel the current booking and inquire about a refund or credit, and you asked for advice regarding future part-time courses and their fees, dates, and enrolment procedures. Your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout, maintaining a clear tone appropriate for a formal letter to an institution. To reach an even higher standard, some points could be expanded with slightly more specific details regarding your future availability, although the current level already fulfills the requirements of the task thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. You have used paragraphing appropriately, with each paragraph addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt: introduction and context, the current problem and refund inquiry, and finally, options for future studies. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, such as transitional phrases like 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'I am still keen'. Paragraphs flow logically into one another, creating a smooth and coherent overall arrangement. Referencing is handled well, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the sequence of events and requests. To achieve an even higher level, you could employ slightly more sophisticated referencing or substitution to connect ideas across paragraphs even more seamlessly, though your current paragraphing is already robust.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

You have demonstrated a sufficient vocabulary range with some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items with awareness of style and collocation. Phrases such as 'formally request', 'paramountly important work assignment', and 'enrolment procedures' show a good control of formal register suitable for a business-like correspondence. Word choices are generally accurate, and spelling is correct throughout the response. To push into higher bands, you could incorporate even more sophisticated or idiomatic phrasing rather than relying on standard formal collocations like 'looking forward to improving', although your current lexical resource effectively communicates your message without impeding the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

Your writing exhibits a wide range of complex structures with the majority of sentences remaining entirely error-free. You successfully integrate conditional and relative clauses, such as 'whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards a future course' and 'once my schedule becomes less demanding'. There is excellent control over verb forms and tenses, ranging from present perfect ('have been offered') to future modals ('will not be able'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled with high precision throughout the entire letter. To reach the top tier, you would need an even higher density of completely flawless complex syntax across every single sentence, but your current control reflects an advanced level of grammatical accuracy.
