explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally request the cancellation of English language course which is due to begin next month. I enrolled in this course two months ago and was looking forward to improving my communication skills for future.
Unfortunately, I have been offered a paramount important work assignment which requires me the travel for the next few months. As a result, I will not be able to attend the classes regularly in the evening. I would be grateful if you could cancel my booking and kindly let me know whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards a future course.
I am still keen to join your course in several months ones my schedule become less demanding. Could you please advise me about any part-time course that are likely to happen in the coming months. I would particularly appreciate the information regarding course fees, dates, and enrolment procedures.
Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Hadid

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing the situation, what the writer would like to do, and asking for advice. The tone is appropriate for a formal correspondence, and the purpose is clear throughout. Ideas are extended and supported, such as explaining the unexpected work assignment and asking about refunds and future scheduling. To move towards higher bands, some of the bullet points could have been even more fully elaborated, such as exploring alternative online study options rather than just part-time classes. However, the current response fully satisfies the requirements for addressing all aspects of the task with a clear and consistent position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the explanation of the situation in the opening paragraphs to discussing future options and asking for advice in the later sections. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'Could you please' are used effectively to connect ideas. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, ensuring the structure is clear and easy to follow. To reach the next level, paragraph transitions could be slightly more varied and subtle, but overall the logical flow is strong and coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal request letter, attempting less common items with general success. Phrases like 'formally request', 'eligible for a refund', and 'enrolment procedures' demonstrate a good awareness of formal register and style. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'English language course' missing the article 'the', 'paramount important work assignment' where 'paramount importance' or 'paramount' is misused, and spelling or form slips like 'ones' instead of 'once'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a level where vocabulary choices still require tighter control and greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures appropriately. Sentences such as 'I would be grateful if you could cancel my booking' show good control of complex syntax. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including 'requires me the travel' instead of 'requires me to travel', and missing pluralization in 'part-time course that are likely to happen'. Punctuation and verb tense management are generally acceptable, but persistent minor errors in prepositions and infinitive structures prevent the response from achieving a higher band, where error-free complex sentences would be more consistent.
