IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to inform you that I have enrolled in your evening course, but unfortunately, I am unable to continue it at the moment. I would like to postpone my studies until the next term.

The main reason for this decision is that my daily schedule has become very busy. Recently, I have taken on some additional responsiblities at work, and i have to stay late in the evening. As a result, it has become difficult for me to attend classes regularly and manage my studies properly.

I am still very interested in completing this course because I believe it will help me improve my knowledge and develop my skills. I would like to continue the course from the beginning of the next term, when my schedules is expexted to be more flexible. I would also like to konw whether I need to pay any additional fees or complete any formalities.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Yours faithfully,

Ekta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt successfully. You clearly explained the situation by stating that you have enrolled in an evening course but need to postpone it. You gave a relevant reason for not being able to continue, mentioning that your daily schedule has become very busy due to additional responsibilities at work. Furthermore, you stated what you would like to do about your studies by expressing your intention to resume the course from the beginning of the next term, and you asked for advice regarding additional fees and formalities. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of your work schedule is slightly brief and could be extended further. To reach a higher level, you should ensure all bullet points are expanded with deeper elaboration and fully developed supporting details throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are naturally sequenced, moving smoothly from the initial purpose of the letter to the background situation, your future intentions, and finally your questions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct communicative purpose. Cohesive devices such as 'unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'still' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although occasional referencing or transitional phrasing could be even more naturally integrated. The overall arrangement is coherent, making the letter very easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully conveying your message to the reader. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'postpone', 'formalities', and 'additional responsibilities', demonstrating a reasonable command of language. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'responsiblities' and 'expexted', alongside minor typographical slips like 'konw'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. To improve further, you should focus on precision in word choice and careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes and ensure greater lexical accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as 'I am writing to inform you that...' and 'I would like to konw whether I need to...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including a lowercase 'i' used as a pronoun and a minor subject-verb agreement slip in 'my schedules is expexted'. However, these errors occur alongside frequent error-free sentences and rarely impede communication. To move up to the next band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures while maintaining strict control over punctuation, capitalization, and verb-subject agreement.
