IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to formally request the cancellation of the English language course which is due to begin next month. I enrolled in this course two months ago and was looking forward to improving my communication skills for the future.

Unfortunately, I have been offered a paramountly important work assignment which requires me to travel for the next few months. As a result, I will not be able to attend the classes regularly in the evening. I would be grateful if you could cancel my booking and kindly let me know whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards a future course.

I am still keen to join your course in several months once my schedule becomes less demanding. Could you please advise me about any part-time course that is likely to happen in the coming months? I would particularly appreciate the information regarding course fees, dates, and enrolment procedures.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Hadid

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task with a clear purpose and well-developed ideas. The writer explains the situation effectively by mentioning the English language course enrollment and the unexpected work assignment that requires travel, fulfilling the first requirement. The second requirement is met by stating the desire to cancel the booking now and take the course at a later term. Finally, the third requirement is covered by asking for advice regarding future part-time courses, fees, and dates. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter, maintaining a clear position throughout. To reach the highest band, the ideas could be extended with even greater nuance, perhaps by elaborating slightly more on the nature of the upcoming travel commitments before inquiring about future enrollment procedures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are naturally sequenced, moving smoothly from the initial explanation of the cancellation to inquiries regarding refunds and future part-time options. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the message: the context and problem, the cancellation request and refund query, and finally the future plans and requests for advice. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'In addition' are used flexibly and appropriately to connect ideas. Referencing is clear throughout, and the letter reads as a cohesive whole. To achieve an even higher level of cohesion, transitions between paragraphs could feel slightly more seamless, though the current structure is already clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient lexical range to allow for flexibility and precision. Less common vocabulary items and formal phrases such as 'formally request', 'paramountly important', and 'enrolment procedures' show a good awareness of style and collocation appropriate for a formal letter. Word choice is generally precise, as seen in expressions like 'schedule becomes less demanding' and 'eligible for a refund'. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move into the highest lexical band, the writer could incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated idiomatic or highly idiomatic phrasing and ensure that every collocation sounds completely natural, as 'paramountly important' is slightly less common than standard formal alternatives like 'of paramount importance'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response features a wide range of structures, encompassing both complex and compound sentences used accurately. The majority of sentences are error-free, reflecting a high level of grammatical control and punctuation. The student successfully employs complex structures such as relative clauses and conditional ideas without losing accuracy, as demonstrated in sentences like 'I would be grateful if you could cancel my booking and kindly let me know whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards a future course.' Verb tenses and forms are handled with great precision across different time frames, from past enrollments to future possibilities. To maintain this high standard, the writer should continue ensuring that complex subordinate clauses remain completely free of minor slips.
