You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Manasvi. The purpose of writing this letter is I will not be able to continue this course and would like to take the course next term instead. I have enrolled in an evening course of physiotherapist assistant but unfortunately, I have found that I am too busy to continue.

To begin with reason, I am suffering from financial issues at my home and because of that I have to do job. My job hours is for 12am to 10pm. Although, my classes are held on 6pm to 9pm. I have tried to convience my manager for time management but he refused my application. He is very strict and the first day of my job he mentioned that I have to come must be on time. Otherwise he will give me layoff. In addition, I have to do this job for my family and because of that I can not continue the course.

Moreover, I am a scholar student in my class. I have completed my homework on time and I would like to complete this course. However, the working hours and my financial situation will not allow to me to complete this course. I like to do care of my patients and I feel greatful when I see them in thier recovery stage. I want to complete this course in any situation to fullfill my dream.

In addition, I would like to ask you what can I do in this situation. Give me an advice for my career. As, you know my situation, I would like to request you to take the course in next term because I can not continue now.

Thank you in advance. I am waiting for your advice.

Kind regards,

Manasvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a General Training letter. The writer clearly explains the situation regarding the evening course in physiotherapy assistance and the inability to continue due to a busy schedule and work commitments. Furthermore, the desired outcome of transferring to the next term is explicitly stated, alongside a request for advice on how to handle the situation. The position is clear throughout the text. While some ideas, such as the personal feelings about patient care, could be seen as slightly tangential to the core administrative request, the main bullet points are adequately addressed and extended, showing a good level of task fulfilment appropriate for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, standard structure including an appropriate salutation and sign-off. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, moving from the main purpose to personal reasons, and finally to the request for advice. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition "To begin with reason" is awkward and unnatural, and referencing is not always clear, such as the abrupt shifts between financial issues, work hours, and patient care motivations. Cohesive devices are present, but their usage occasionally lacks smoothness, resulting in a somewhat disjointed flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and express personal feelings, such as "financial issues," "convience," and "greatful." However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that reflect a limited and developing lexical range. Examples include "scholar student" instead of model or diligent student, "do job" instead of work, and spelling errors like "convience" and "thier." These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision, better control of collocations, and improved accuracy in everyday and semi-formal written English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include tense and preposition issues in "My job hours is for 12am to 10pm," "classes are held on 6pm to 9pm," and "allow to me." Article and pluralization errors also occur, such as "give me layoff" and "ask you what can I do." While these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, they are persistent enough to restrict the response, preventing it from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
