Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, covering the explanation of the situation, the desired course of action, and the request for advice. For instance, the writer explains that they need to attend a family wedding in their village, states their wish to postpone the evening classes to the next term, and asks about taking a break or switching to online sessions. However, some aspects are handled more fully than others; the development of ideas tends to be repetitive, with several overlapping requests phrased as 'I am requesting you' rather than extending the discussion logically. While the purpose is clearly communicated and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a registration office, the mechanical repetition of ideas prevents the content from achieving a higher level of thorough development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the letter, beginning with a standard salutation and ending with a sign-off, but the overall progression of ideas lacks clear structure. The paragraphs are not fully developed, and sentences are often clustered together without smooth logical transitions. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and sometimes inaccurately, such as the frequent reliance on 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' to link loosely connected thoughts. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when the writer uses ambiguous pronouns like 'either my education or my future' without clearly establishing the relationship between the concepts. This results in a somewhat disjointed flow that requires the reader to work harder to follow the progression of the writer's requests.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to explain the situation, but it remains basic and repetitive. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'recommendation' and 'prompt response', but these attempts are accompanied by notable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'evening time course' instead of 'evening course' and 'attend my brother wedding' instead of 'brother's wedding'. There are also minor spelling and word choice slips like 'regading' instead of 'regarding' and 'claases' instead of 'classes'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight limitations in precision and lexical control that keep the vocabulary at a modest level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence patterns alongside some faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and verb form issues like 'whether I take term break', missing articles such as 'in next term' and 'attend my brother wedding', and awkward dependent prepositions or clause structures like 'hope you come up with good advice'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, particularly in the opening greeting 'Dear, registration office.' and the improper lowercase use of 'i'. Although the meaning remains mostly discernible despite these errors, the frequency of structural inaccuracies causes some difficulty for the reader and restricts the grammatical score.
