ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to bring to your attention that i will not be able to continue with the clinical course in which i have enrolled for this term and I would like to complete it in the next term.
I am offered to work in a clinic as a part-time employee for a evening shift as the timings as the course classes. I applied for this job because I am having a shortage of funds and it is getting difficult for me to manage my expenses. So, I would like to shift this course to my upcoming term as I will be able to pay my fees with more ease.
I will attend my other classes in the morning slot and will try to submit my assignments and projects on time. This will help me to create a proper work-study balance. Moreover, I will enroll in an another affordable course for this term.
However, I can take online classes for this course and submit my projects on timely basis. I would like to have your opinion regarding this decision and suggestions for what can be done in this situation.
I am looking forward to your positive rsponse.
Yours faithfully,
Ava

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining the situation regarding your busy evening course and the new part-time job, stating the desired outcome to defer the course to the next term, and asking for advice on alternative solutions such as taking online classes. A clear semi-formal tone and purpose are maintained throughout the letter. The ideas are generally relevant and well-developed, representing a solid completion of the requirements, though some aspects such as the exploration of alternative online study could be extended further to achieve a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical progression between paragraphs, moving smoothly from the explanation of the situation to your proposed solution and finally asking for advice. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with simple transitions used rather than a flexible range of cohesive devices, and referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive, which keeps the response at this level rather than reaching higher.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully communicating your personal situation with terms like 'clinical course', 'part-time employee', and 'work-study balance'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'for a evening shift as the timings as the course classes' and 'in an another affordable course', alongside a minor spelling slip in 'rsponse'. These errors do not impede communication, but a greater precision and control of less common lexical items would be needed to reach a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordinate clauses such as 'as I will be able to pay my fees'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including capitalization lapses like 'i', prepositions inside grammatical patterns like 'for a evening shift', and article usage. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To improve further, a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and more consistent control over articles and prepositions are required.
