Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response sits at this band because it only partially addresses the prompt requirements. While the writer attempts to explain the situation regarding being too busy with final exams and wanting to defer to next term, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, and the purpose of asking for advice about the situation is handled only minimally. Additionally, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains 146 words, falling slightly short of the 150-word minimum, which restricts the depth of the explanation. To move to a higher band, the writer must fully develop all bullet points with clear, supported details and ensure the word count exceeds the minimum threshold.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some overall organization, but lacks a clear and logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas feels disjointed, and the relationships between sentences are not always clear. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately, such as abrupt transitions between the explanation of studies and future goals. For instance, phrases like 'here, i requested to advice' disrupt the flow of the letter. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure a smoother, more logical progression of ideas with appropriate and natural cohesive links between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a basic range suitable for this level. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, such as writing 'latter' instead of 'letter', 'collge' implied through 'collage', and 'insted' instead of 'instead'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To reach a higher level, the writer should expand their vocabulary range, practice correct word forms, and carefully proofread their writing to eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mainly of simple structures and faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense usage, articles, and sentence construction, such as 'i am writing latter to my enrolled evening course' and 'i prepare of my final exam'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistently applied, with lowercase letters starting sentences and names. These frequent errors distract from the meaning and make the text difficult to follow. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free sentence structures and exercise better control over basic grammatical rules.
