IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing to inform that i am an international student at KPU and recently, I have entrolled in Micro economic, which is delivered especially in the evening. I would like to continue this course in next term due to my hectic schedule.

Currently, i am working at ups as a package handler and also enrolled in other two practical subjects advanced accounting and managerial accounting. These subjects are demanding consistent efforts and a positive mindset to get good academic results. Therefore, i decide to take evening course in upcoming semester.

I want to become a Chartered Professional Accountant, which required overall 4 GPA as it is result of industriousness. I would like to make balance between academic and professional life.

I would appreciate it if could provide advice for dropping course or another session is available weather online or in person.

Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your response.

Your faithfully, Rajvir Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, achieving an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for corresponding with a course administrator. You clearly explain the situation by stating that you are an international student facing a hectic schedule due to your package handler job and other demanding accounting subjects. You also clearly state your objective to take the course next term and ask for practical advice regarding dropping the current session and checking for online or in-person alternatives. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully expanded; for example, the mention of your career goal to become a Chartered Professional Accountant is introduced but not tightly integrated into the primary request to reschedule the course. To move towards higher bands, every bullet point and associated reason could be expanded with greater depth and seamless contextual relevance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall logical arrangement and progression throughout, organizing the content into purposeful paragraphs that separate the greeting, the explanation of the situation, your future goals and inquiries, and the polite closing. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'Currently', 'Therefore', and 'Thank you for your time and support' to connect your ideas. At the same time, referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the transitional flow between sentences can feel slightly abrupt, such as the jump between discussing your GPA goals and asking for administrative advice in the final body paragraph. To achieve a higher band, you would need to ensure that referencing and cohesive links are managed more naturally and smoothly without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message with enough range to discuss your academic schedule, job, and career aspirations using terms like 'hectic schedule', 'demanding', and 'industriousness'. You attempt less common vocabulary items, but this is accompanied by some word-choice and word-form inaccuracies, such as writing 'entrolled' instead of 'enrolled', referring to the subject as 'Micro economic' instead of 'Microeconomics', and using the phrase 'dropping course' where an article is missing. Additionally, spelling and capitalization slips occur, such as 'weather' instead of 'whether' and lowercase letters for 'i' and 'ups'. These errors do not impede communication, but to reach the next band, you must demonstrate greater precision in word choice, collocation, and spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses alongside compound sentences. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include capitalization issues ('Dear sir' and lowercase 'i'), missing articles ('next term' and 'dropping course'), and minor agreement or prepositional slips within clauses, such as 'which required overall 4 GPA' instead of 'which requires an overall 4.0 GPA'. You also make errors in verb tense and form consistency, such as 'i decide to take' instead of 'decided'. To reach a higher band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences while maintaining a wide and flexible variety of complex grammatical structures.
