Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the main purpose of the letter by explaining the situation and mentioning a wish to take the course next term, though the bullet points are only minimally covered and the final sentence is incomplete, cutting off abruptly. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum by six words. Ideas remain limited and under-developed due to the lack of clear progression, and the tone is overly informal and personal for a formal institutional request. To improve towards a higher band, you must fully develop all parts of the prompt with relevant supporting details, ensure a complete and appropriate ending, and strictly meet the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression from sentence to sentence. The letter lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as a single block of text, which makes the flow difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are largely inadequate or missing, and run-on sentences are prevalent, such as linking multiple distinct clauses with commas rather than full stops or appropriate conjunctions (e.g., 'he came from cananda for his wedding he wanted that i should be with him do the arrangemnt'). Referencing is also unclear in places, such as ambiguous pronoun use. To achieve a higher band, you need to divide your letter into clear paragraphs, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and separate ideas into distinct, logically sequenced sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'clases', 'marraige', 'cananda', 'arrangemnt', 'dispointed', and 'weekand'. You make basic attempts at describing your situation, but the lexical range lacks flexibility and precision. To move up to the next band, you should expand your vocabulary by using less common lexical items accurately, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and ensure that your phrasing is appropriate for a formal request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses strung together with commas to create run-on sentences. Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles (e.g., 'i am writing inform', 'i make a decision', 'i will come my syllabus on weekand'). Punctuation is also weak, with a lack of capitalisation for 'I' and proper sentence boundaries. To improve, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures with better control over sentence boundaries, tense consistency, and punctuation.
