explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about my unavailability to continue the evening dance course for which I recently enrolled and would like to request to transfer me to the upcoming term instead.
The main concern is I have to prepare for my upcoming grade 12th board examination which is going to take place in two months. Although I thought I would be able to manage the course along with my academics, it is now challenging situation for me to prepare for my upcoming exam.
Unfortunatly, I have to pause my dance lessons. Dance is not only my hobby but it also is my passion for the life. It was hard for me to take this step but to achieve good grades in examination I need to do it.
I would appriciate if you can suggest me something for this situation so I can be more clear.
Yours sincerely,
Krishna Yogi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for a general correspondence task. You clearly explain the situation regarding your enrolment in the evening dance course and provide the reason why you cannot continue, citing your upcoming grade 12th board examination. You also state what you would like to do by requesting a transfer to the upcoming term. Furthermore, you ask for advice about what you can do about the situation in your final paragraph. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of your passion for dance is somewhat repetitive and does not fully extend the main argument. To reach a higher level, the elaboration on your personal feelings could be tied more directly to the administrative request, ensuring every sentence adds distinct value to the overall message.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement with a logical flow from the statement of purpose to the explanation, the emotional reflection, and finally the request for advice. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each distinct idea, providing a structured layout suitable for a formal or semi-formal request. However, referencing and cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or somewhat simplistic, such as the direct transitions between paragraphs. To progress further, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices and more sophisticated referencing to link your ideas seamlessly without relying on repetitive sentence starters, creating a smoother progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common expressions such as 'unavailability', 'enrolled', and 'academics'. Your vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, despite a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Unfortunatly' and 'appriciate', which show minor lapses in lexical accuracy. There are also slight collocated awkwardness issues, such as 'passion for the life'. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a more precise and sophisticated range of less common lexical items with accurate spelling and natural collocations, avoiding minor slips that slightly distract from the professional tone of the correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of basic sentence architecture. You successfully construct complex clauses, as seen in sentences like 'I am writing to inform you about my unavailability to continue the evening dance course for which I recently enrolled'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('it is now challenging situation') and slight structural awkwardness ('request to transfer me'). These errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards a higher standard, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex structures and ensure tighter control over articles and prepositional patterns.
