IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the course I enrolled in the evening however I have some busy schedule, so I would like to take the course in following batch instead.

As I mentioned earlier I might need to go for part job which I joined already though I cannot come on time to learn this course. Additionally, traffic is one of the major issue I might can join the course however in the evening time traffic congestion increases which takes lot of time to reach there.

Since I chose biology subject for my future career, chemisrty is my weak subject that is why I took this course to imrpove my knowledge and skills. This subject is not mandatory throughout my career, but it is important to learn basics of biology.

I would like to request you if you allow me to join the next term instead, I can manage timing and focus on this course. Also, if you change timing of this batch then I would like to join soon.

I look forward to hearning from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Jinal Prajapati.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You explain that your part-time job and evening traffic make it difficult to attend, and you clearly state that you want to take the course next term. You also ask the recipient to consider changing the current class time, so the main purpose is understandable. However, the request for advice is not fully developed: you ask whether the timing can be changed, but do not directly ask what other options or procedures are available. The explanation of your studies—especially the link between biology, chemistry and your career—also takes space without clarifying what you need from the course. Make each requested point explicit and add a direct question about possible arrangements, such as deferral or transferring to another class.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, explanations, a request and a polite closing. Paragraphs generally group related information, and connectors such as “Additionally” and “Since” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression is not always clear: the paragraph about biology and chemistry interrupts the explanation of your attendance problem and request. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “As I mentioned earlier,” although no earlier information has been given, and “Also, if you change timing” does not clearly connect to the request to defer. Organise the letter around the three task points—your circumstances, your preferred study plan, and your request for advice—and use simpler, more precise transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic situation, with relevant terms such as “traffic congestion,” “mandatory,” and “focus on this course.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the reader pause. For example, “some busy schedule” is not idiomatic, and “go for part job” does not express your meaning clearly. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “chemisrty,” “imrpove,” and “hearning.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Choose common, accurate phrases for formal correspondence and proofread carefully; for instance, explain that you have started a part-time job and cannot arrive in time for class.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “Since” and a conditional request beginning “if.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. In “I am writing this letter regarding the course I enrolled in the evening however I have some busy schedule,” clauses are joined without clear punctuation and the sentence structure is incomplete or awkward. “I might can join” also combines modal verbs incorrectly, while “if you allow me to join” would be clearer as a direct request. Work on sentence boundaries, articles and verb patterns, and build longer sentences from accurate clauses. Careful punctuation and a final grammar check would improve readability.
