IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my feelings towards the evening course. Now a days I am busy due to daily hospital routine. I am too busy with my patients, that's why I will not continue this course in evening. I would like to take the course next term instead.

Due to my evening shift, I will not able to attend the course next week, because my colleague will be absent in the next week, because of her brother wedding. So, in place of that, I will work in the evening. So, that's why I will not continue my course.

In my free time, like in the morning after my walk, I will study deeply, because my friend who is also part of this course will share to me slides on daily basis. In this way, there is no loss for me.

In that tough situation, please give me some advice that I would be follow foe next week, may be your advice would help me.

Yours faithfully,

Naseem Javed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You explain that your hospital duties and an evening shift prevent you from attending, and you clearly state that you would like to take the course next term. However, the request for advice is vague: “please give me some advice that I would be follow foe next week” does not specify what decision or options you need help with. The letter also says you will not attend “next week” and that you will not continue the course, without clearly explaining whether you are asking to defer formally or withdraw for the rest of the term. Develop this request by asking about the procedure for transferring your enrolment and whether you can access course materials meanwhile. The main points are present, but they are limited and not fully clarified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable format and separates the explanation, study plans and advice request into paragraphs, so the reader can identify its main topics. However, there is no clear progression from the immediate absence to the request to defer, and the explanation repeats itself: “I will not continue this course” and “So, that's why I will not continue my course.” Linking words such as “because” and “so” are also repeated or combined awkwardly, as in “because … because” and “So, that's why.” The paragraph about studying independently introduces a new point but does not connect it clearly to the request. Organise the letter around the three task points and use more precise links and references to make the sequence easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the central situation, including “evening course,” “patients,” “colleague,” and “next term.” However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural or make the message less clear. “Express my feelings towards the evening course” does not accurately introduce a request to defer, while “daily hospital routine” and “study deeply” are not natural expressions in this context. There are also noticeable errors such as “Now a days” and “foe,” which can distract the reader. Aim for precise, conventional language for a formal letter—for example, explain that work commitments prevent attendance and ask about deferring enrolment. This would make your meaning clearer and more appropriate to the recipient.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because my colleague will be absent,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently, particularly in verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “I will not able to attend” needs “be,” and “advice that I would be follow” has an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “Due to my evening shift” then repeats “because” and becomes difficult to manage. Punctuation also contributes to run-on or awkwardly joined ideas. Practise accurate patterns such as “I will be unable to attend because…” and separate related reasons into clear sentences. More reliable control of these structures would improve readability.
