IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

The main reason for my writing is to inform you about to change my enrollement for next semester as this term I am busy. My name is Himanshi Patel and my enrollment number is [redacted phone].

Few days ago I found an oppourtinity to do internship in a multispeciality hospital for a 4 months. Unfortunately, the time would be around 3 P.M to 9 P.M. Therefore, I am not able to continue in an evening course this term. I think it would be a great time for me to learn practical things from there while working with a professional staff.

I would like to continue my study after completing internship as it would be quite easy for me to learn my course in detail. During this period I also make sure to read syllabus of our course which I already completed.

Morover, it would be appreciated if you provide me any idea or a suggestion regarding my situation.

I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that the internship runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., say you want to resume your studies after it, and ask for advice. The reason is relevant and supported by the opportunity to gain practical experience, while your student details and formal closing suit a letter to an institution. Your intended plan is also clear, including keeping up with the syllabus. To make the response more fully developed, specify the exact action you are requesting—for example, whether the college can defer your enrolment, transfer your fees, or reserve a place next term. The request for “any idea or a suggestion” is polite but general, so a more precise question would strengthen the letter’s purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening purpose, an explanation of the internship, your plan for studying later, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and connectors such as “Unfortunately,” “Therefore,” and “while” show relationships between ideas. This gives the response a coherent progression. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “The main reason for my writing” is followed by a sentence that is difficult to interpret, and “During this period” could refer either to the internship or the time before resuming study. The final request also feels somewhat detached from the specific plan. Clarify these references and connect the advice request directly to the deferral you are seeking.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal course-related letter, including “internship,” “practical things,” “professional staff,” and “continue my study.” The meaning is generally clear, and the tone is appropriately polite. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “enrollement,” “oppourtinity,” and “Morover” are misspelled, while “change my enrollement” and “learn my course in detail” are not natural collocations. “A great time” is also vague in this context. Proofread carefully and choose more idiomatic phrases, such as “defer my enrolment,” “gain practical experience,” and “study the course material in depth.” This would make the letter sound more fluent and professional without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “as,” a result link with “Therefore,” and a time clause beginning “while.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “inform you about to change” needs a noun or gerund construction, such as “inform you that I would like to change”; “for a 4 months” needs “for four months”; and “I also make sure” should be “I will also make sure” to match the future plan. In “I would like to continue my study,” the possessive form “my studies” is needed. Review verb forms, articles, and singular/plural agreement, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence structures.
