IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Mam,

I am sending this email to kindly inform you that i won't able to continue my Business Analytics course in this term. I am enrolled in 4 course already and if i will add this one in my current term, it would not be able to flexible with my Kob schedule.

i have decided that if i would take this course in the next term, i will be able to do it with more focus and will be more punctual towards my classes. Also, i have only 2 more courses left for the next term and this would be great option for me to continue .

I would really appreciate your advice on this matter and i would try my best to go forward with your opinion. I hope you will respond to this email and provide me your help and support.

Yours Faithfully,

Pawanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that your current course load and work schedule make continuing difficult, state that you want to take Business Analytics next term, and ask for advice. The intended plan is clear, and the reason is relevant. However, the explanation is brief, and the request for advice remains general: “I would really appreciate your advice on this matter” does not specify what options you want the recipient to consider, such as deferral or transferring your enrolment. The claim that you have “only 2 more courses left” also needs a clearer link to why next term would be manageable. More specific details and a direct question would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a sensible overall sequence: it introduces the problem, explains the preferred plan, and closes by requesting help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Also” and “I would really appreciate” help connect the ideas. Some links are less clear, however. The relationship between having two courses left next term and being able to take this course is not fully explained, while “if i will add this one” makes the first paragraph harder to follow. The closing repeats the request for help in “respond to this email” and “provide me your help and support.” Clarifying the connections between reasons and plan, and making the final request more direct, would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant course-related vocabulary, including “Business Analytics course,” “current term,” “next term,” and “classes,” so the reader can understand the situation. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I would really appreciate your advice.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “Kob schedule,” “great option,” and “go forward with your opinion.” These reduce precision and make parts of the letter less natural, even though the main message remains understandable. Choose conventional phrases for work commitments and course arrangements, and use more precise wording when describing the action you want the recipient to take.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, for example, the conditional sentence beginning “if i would take this course in the next term” and the sentence explaining your current course load. This shows some range, but errors in verb forms and sentence construction are noticeable. Examples include “i won't able to continue,” “if i will add this one,” and “it would not be able to flexible.” The sentence beginning “I am enrolled in 4 course already” also has errors in article and plural use. Capitalisation of “I” and punctuation around the final sentence need attention. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your plan, but more accurate conditional forms and carefully checked sentence patterns would strengthen control.
