IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am unable to attend the evening course due to my busy schedule. Also, I will take this course in my next semester

Firstly, I think I have enough time to complete this course with my job duties, but my job responsibilities have increased. So, its to much difficult to manage the job and the study. Therefore, I am unable to give the time and attention its requries.

I am interested in completing this course because I believe I can gain more knowledge and skills. Instead of continuing this course now, I would like to postpone this course to next term when I have a more flexible schedule.

Can you advise me on transferring my course to next term, and what is the procedure for this? I would really appreciate it if you let me know any additional fees or documents required.

Thanks for your time and understanding. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Kulveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that increased job responsibilities prevent you from continuing, state that you want to defer the course until next term, and ask about the transfer procedure and possible fees or documents. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the request for practical advice is relevant. The explanation is supported by the contrast between your earlier expectation and your current workload, although the reason could be developed a little more specifically—for example, by explaining how the new duties affect your available study time. To strengthen the response further, make the proposed arrangement more precise, such as asking whether your enrolment can be carried forward and whether any deadline applies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the problem, explain the change in your circumstances, describe your preferred solution, and then ask for advice. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and expressions such as “Firstly,” “Therefore,” and “Instead of” make the progression easy to follow. The organisation is coherent overall, though some linking is a little mechanical, and the opening repeats the intention to take the course next term before the details are explained. The transition from the reason for leaving to your interest in completing the course is understandable but could be smoother. Use fewer formulaic connectors and link ideas more naturally, while keeping each paragraph focused on one purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation and request, with relevant phrases such as “job responsibilities,” “flexible schedule,” “postpone,” and “additional fees.” However, the range is somewhat limited, and several word-choice, spelling, or collocation errors reduce precision: “its to much difficult” is not an appropriate expression, and “give the time and attention” would be more natural as “devote the time and attention.” “Next semester” is also less consistent with the task’s wording of “next term.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding more elaborate vocabulary. Proofread spelling and apostrophes, and choose precise phrases such as “defer my enrolment” or “meet the course requirements” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “because I believe I can gain more knowledge and skills” and the conditional request “I would really appreciate it if you let me know…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I think I have enough time to complete this course with my job duties” needs clearer tense and phrasing to show that this was your earlier expectation; “So, its to much difficult” also contains errors in sentence construction and punctuation. The request could be framed more formally as a question, such as “Could you advise me…?” Continue practising accurate clause construction, punctuation, and sentence boundaries while retaining this variety.
