IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Administration team,
I am writing to explain my situation regarding the course I am enrolled in. After the enrollement, I have realised that I am really busy during this period and would not be able to attend classes.
Looking at the situation, my working schedule has been changed recently, causing me to work at night. Due to this reason, It would be difficult to manage my time accordingly. However, I would like to take the course next term if possible. Being an only earner in the family, it does not allow to reduce work hours.
Thus, I would like to requesting a refund of tuition or use it for next enrollment. Also, I would like an advise from the advisor to manage this kind of situations in future and to know about what I can really this time without compromising work.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you for understanding and the support.
Best regards,
Hemangi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that a changed work schedule means you must work at night, state that you hope to take the course next term, and ask for advice. The reason that you are the family’s only earner also helps explain why reducing your hours is not an option. However, the request about what should happen to your tuition is not fully clear: “requesting a refund of tuition or use it for next enrollment” presents alternatives without specifying your preference or asking whether either is possible. The final request for advice is also somewhat unclear. Develop these points more directly—for example, state whether you prefer a transfer of fees and ask what steps are required to defer your place.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces your situation, explains the work conflict, then makes requests and closes politely. Linking expressions such as “However” and “Thus” help show the relationship between ideas, and the paragraphs broadly separate the main points. To make the progression more natural, avoid using “Looking at the situation” as a general lead-in and connect the schedule change directly to your request to defer. The sentence beginning “Thus” combines a refund or transfer request with a separate request for advice, so the reader has to work to follow both. Give each request its own sentence or paragraph, and make references such as “this time” more specific.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal request, including “enrolled,” “working schedule,” “reduce work hours,” and “compromising work.” These choices communicate the main circumstances, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision: “enrollement” is misspelled, “an advise” uses the wrong form, and “use it for next enrollment” is not a natural way to describe transferring fees. “Manage this kind of situations” is also awkwardly phrased. Aim for accurate collocations and forms, such as “transfer the tuition fee to next term” and “ask for advice about my options.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would make the message more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect construction “my working schedule has been changed recently, causing me to work at night.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I would like to requesting” should be “I would like to request,” and “it does not allow to reduce work hours” needs a clear subject and object, such as “this means I cannot reduce my work hours.” In “what I can really this time,” a verb is missing, making the meaning unclear. Check verb patterns after “would like,” sentence completeness, and capitalisation after a full stop to improve control.
