Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear course coordinator,
I am writing a letter to defferal my evening course which is business ethics to next term due to hectic schedule.
In this term I am busy in as my company start reconstructing and increase their productivity. It is difficult for me to handle my workload and my company prefer to work overtime as well as prefer weekday evenings. It is impossible to attend my classes regularly as well as unable to focus on my studeis.
I would like stop my current studies instead off drop the course as this course not only important but also beneficial for me future career. The delay will allow me to proper time manage between my studies and workload. I will make a proper time table between my studies and work.
Could you advice me to what is the process of take this course into next term? and is there any effect on my term as well as completion time. Is all the tuition fees structure are same?
I appreciated to you as you give me a proper guidance to defferal my course and devote your time on me.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you explain that increased workload and overtime prevent regular attendance, state that you want to defer rather than drop the course, and ask about the process, completion time, and fees. The reason for postponing is relevant, and you explain that the course will benefit your career. This gives the letter a clear purpose and position throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify the term you hope to join and clarify whether you are requesting a formal deferral or asking about eligibility. The request for advice is useful, but could be more direct and precise about what guidance you need.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible order: the opening states its purpose, the next paragraphs explain the circumstances and your preferred outcome, and the final body paragraph asks practical questions. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and links such as “as well as” and “instead of” show attempts to connect ideas. However, some connections are awkward or unclear, particularly “I am busy in as my company start reconstructing” and the sequence of questions beginning “Could you advice me to what is the process.” The closing also repeats the request for guidance. More natural transitions and a clearer separation of the questions would make the progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “workload,” “overtime,” “beneficial,” and “completion time,” so the reader can understand the main message. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “devote your time” and “proper guidance.” However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the language noticeably imprecise: “defferal,” “reconstructing,” “proper time manage,” and “tuition fees structure” are not natural or accurate in context. Some phrases, including “busy in as,” are difficult to interpret. Build a more reliable range of formal course-administration vocabulary and check spelling and word forms; this will help you express the same ideas more clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “as this course not only important but also beneficial for me future career,” and you use clauses to explain reasons and consequences. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to affect clarity. Examples include “I would like stop,” “as this course not only important,” and “Could you advice me to what is the process of take this course.” The questions also need clearer word order and punctuation. Practise complete clause structures, infinitives after “would like,” and forming indirect questions—for example, “Could you advise me on the process for taking this course next term?”
